In the world of globalization where economy grows in a fast pace, rapid development consequently creates some gap and impact on local economy and brings social concerns: such as people leaving their traditional local business behind and migrating to cities. Lina Sakai is the CEO of Fermenstation Co., Ltd., a company she founded in 2009 that manufactures alcohol from unused resources such as biomass. Fermenstation is a premium ethanol venture business manufacturing alcohol and fermented residue from rice in unused rice fields to create a sustainable society.
Lina’s curiosity to make use of the resources that have not been effectively utilized drove her to study fermentation technology. With this knowledge, she converted the rice grown in the unused paddies in the Tohoku region of Japan into ethanol. It was at this time that she decided to become an entrepreneur. Through Fermenstation, she someday hopes to give rise to a renewable society — a society that encourages and supports the creation of raw materials from unused resources.
The company’s sustainable and eco-friendly business model is key to its success. Any by-product is turned into a value-added ingredient or its own product. The company mainly produces and supplies premium ethanol as a raw material, something found in cosmetics, perfumes, foods and even beverages. It also, develops and markets several original products such as premium facial soap and cosmeceuticals. Although ethanol was initially considered as a fuel, the company has been successful in creating a market for cosmetics and eventually branched out into organic alcohol, no venture business has ever accomplished.
Lina was awarded the Audience Award at Global Brains Alliance Forum 2018, Special Award at JR East Startup Demo Day2018, The DBJ 3rd Women Entrepreneurs New Business Plan Competition, Special Innovation Award and the British Business Award 2014 (Community Contribution), is The Entrepreneur Awards Japan (TEAJ) Finalist and
Japan Representative for Creative Business Cup 2014 Denmark etc. Her Products received Social Products Award 2014.
Lina graduated from the International Christian University and the Tokyo University of Agriculture. Prior to establishing Fermenstation, she worked at the Fuji Bank, Ltd. (current Mizuho Corporate Bank, Ltd.) and Deutsche Securities.
